Work to Start Friday on Futuristic School

A bigger and better Manhattan Beach middle school will begin to take shape Friday when construction crews begin building the state-of-the-art campus.

The new middle school, funded by a $47-million bond measure passed in 1995, will be the first campus in the South Bay to be built to accommodate anticipated technological demands of the 21st century.

Each classroom will be wired to allow high-tech teaching methods. Science laboratories will be built with futuristic workstations and the multipurpose room will be built with computer capability.

In addition, the school will be designed to look like a village. The sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders will each have their own buildings.

“When this is finished people will be able to walk into the school of the future,” said Supt. Gerry Davis. “This school will be a shining star in the community, one that everyone will be proud of.”

The $20-million middle school will be on Redondo Avenue at the site of a former elementary school that will be torn down. The school, scheduled to open in September 1998, will accommodate about 1,200 students.
