Lott Denounces 2 Senate Democrats

Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.) denounced two freshman Democratic senators as dishonest and deceptive because they reversed their stands and announced they will oppose the balanced-budget amendment to the Constitution when it is brought to a vote. In a floor speech that was uncharacteristically harsh, Lott called on the constituents of Sens. Tim Johnson (D-S.D.) and Robert Torricelli (D-N.J.) to demand they back the amendment, which now faces almost certain defeat.
