Heart Disease Screenings

There are some risk factors for heart disease--heredity, for one--that you simply cannot change. But there are risk factors that you can do a lot to remove: excessive weight, smoking, too little exercise.

If you want to find out whether you are at high risk for heart disease, you can visit a hospital-based fitness center today to get a free screening and consultation.

The tests include measuring body fat, taking a waist-to-hip ratio, doing a three-minute cardiovascular assessment and measuring blood pressure.

The 15-minute assessment and a consultation on your results might cost $20 to $60 if you had to pay for it, said Kim Robledo, a fitness instructor at Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital.

But the center has been providing the free service all week as part of its community activities centering around February’s designation as National Heart Month.

“This is a chance to talk with a certified trainer, get personal attention based on your specific medical history and take away some good advice,†Robledo said.
