Michel Helps Simi Valley Cruise Past Santa Monica

Rafael Berumen was held to 11 points but freshman forward Brett Michel scored 24 to lead Simi Valley High to a 53-46 victory over Santa Monica in a Southern Section Division I-AA second-round playoff game Tuesday night at Santa Monica.

Simi Valley (23-3) will play Long Beach Poly, an 85-42 victor over Channel Islands, in a quarterfinal game Friday night at a site to be determined.

Berumen, a 6-foot-8 sophomore who averages 23.7 points a game, was double-teamed by Vikings (13-12), leaving Michel open.

Branduinn Fullove added 10 points for the Pioneers.

Long Beach Poly 85, Channel Islands 42--Bernabe Simon had 11 points in defeat for the Raiders (20-6) at Channel Islands.

In Division I-A:

Antelope Valley 93, Rowland 82--Le’Tre Kelly had 25 points and 16 rebounds, Ziaire Williams had 24 points and Tony Walker had 21 points and nine assists for the Antelopes (22-6) at Rowland.

In Division II-AA:

Burbank 49, San Marcos 33--Juni Williams scored 21 points for the Bulldogs (15-10) at San Marcos (13-14).

In Division III-A:

Harvard-Westlake 93, Compton Centennial 46--Jarron Collins had 24 points, eight rebounds, six steals and six blocked shots, and Jason Collins had 15 points, 25 rebounds and five blocked shots, for the Wolverines (30-1) at Notre Dame High.

In Division V-AA:

Montclair Prep 82, Aquinas 72--Rocky Steryo had 25 points and the Mounties (19-6) took the lead for good early in the fourth quarter.

Campbell Hall 69, Lone Pine 65--Kevin Pullinger scored 27 points and Ronie Polk had 16 for the Vikings (14-12) at Lone Pine.

In Division V-A:

Santa Maria Valley Christian 103, Cornerstone Christian 94--Justin Taylor’s three-pointer with 22 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter got the Eagles even, 89-89, but the top-seeded Lions (16-8) won in overtime at Camarillo High.

Steve Carter had 44 points, 13 rebounds, 10 steals and nine assists for Cornerstone Christian (13-9).
