Woman Drowns After Hitting Head in Fall
A woman who was taking a day trip with friends in Los Padres National Forest drowned Sunday in a creek backwater after apparently slipping on a rock and hitting her head, authorities said.
Investigators believe that the 46-year-old Nashville, Tenn., resident was trying to cross Matilija Creek at the Wheeler Gorge campground, north of Ojai, between 10 and 11 a.m. when she slipped, lost consciousness and drowned.
She was found by the campground hosts shortly after 11:30 a.m. in about six inches of water, authorities said.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity is being withheld pending notification of family.
