Arrest of Japanese Terrorists Reported

TOKYO — At least five members of Japan’s Red Army terrorist group, which carried out numerous hijackings and attacks in the 1970s, have been detained by authorities in Lebanon, Japanese media reported today.
The government has not confirmed the reports. If the reports are true, officials said Japan would probably want custody.
Japan’s largest newspaper, Yomiuri Shimbun, quoted sources saying that Lebanon, which had long tolerated the pro-Palestinian Red Army’s activities, felt emboldened to crack down as a result of progress in Middle East peace talks.
