Re “Swiss Banks Setting Up Victims Fund,” Feb. 6.
Jewish organizations contend that Swiss banks contain as much as $7 billion in savings accounts of Holocaust victims. Bowing to international pressure, three Swiss banks set up an escrow account of $70 million, named the Humanitarian Fund for the Victims of the Holocaust. Swiss diplomat Thomas Borer stated the action “should take the pressure off Switzerland and show our good faith to do what’s necessary.”
It might be good publicity but it isn’t good faith. I would consider “good faith” at least a tithe, that is, $700 million. Even that amount would be “the tip of the iceberg.”
