Orchestra Protest
Since I’ve experienced religious discrimination at times in my life, and since I’m a woman, I would be expected to support gender fairness in the world (“Protests Planned for Viennese,†Jan. 7, and “Viennese to Reconsider Refusal to Admit Women,†Feb. 10). But I also have to support simple logic!
The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra has given this world greatness. The orchestra does not take tax dollars from the general public. The orchestra does not prevent other orchestras from accepting women or from creating an all-woman’s orchestra or from creating orchestras of one religious or ethnic group of people. The symphony does not force people to attend their concerts.
I protest the protest. Allow the Vienna Philharmonic to keep its bias, its snobbery, perhaps, and its tradition, and allow it to continue to give us the sounds of Mozart and Beethoven.
