New Airport Proposal Expected
BURBANK — City officials today plan to announce a possible resolution to the long-standing dispute with Burbank Airport authorities over the proposed construction of a larger passenger terminal.
Mayor Bill Wiggins and Councilman Ted McConkey are expected to reveal “an important new city proposal to resolve [the city’s] dispute with the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority over expansion and modernization of the Burbank Airport,†according to a brief statement issued by the city Monday.
City officials either declined to elaborate on the proposal or were unavailable for comment.
The new proposal was not the result of a joint effort or an agreement by both sides in the dispute, city and airport officials said.
Many Burbank residents oppose a larger terminal because of potential problems including more noise, traffic and pollution. Airport officials say about 5 million travelers use the airport a year and that a new terminal is needed for safety and to better handle the demand.
In recent days, the Federal Aviation Administration approved the airport’s request to use $24.2 million in passenger fees toward buying land for the terminal and rejected city efforts to have an additional $8.6-million FAA grant suspended.
