Fountain Valley Takes Big Lead, Hangs On to Beat Marina

Fountain Valley took advantage of Marina’s poor shooting in the third quarter to open a 16-point lead, then hung on for a 60-53 upset of the fifth-ranked Vikings in a Sunset League girls’ basketball game Thursday at Fountain Valley.

Katie McCluskey scored 14 points and Kelly Boeke had 13 for Fountain Valley (8-15, 2-5), which outscored Marina, 14-4, in the third quarter to lead, 50-34.

Marina made none of its 16 shots from the field in the quarter. Marina lost to Edison, 77-72, earlier in the week.

In another Sunset League game:

Huntington Beach 55, Edison 52--Debbie Slama made two free throws with 20 seconds left to give Huntington Beach a three-point lead. Phouangmaly Pravongviengkham led the Oilers (15-6, 4-2) with 14 points. Slama had 13.

In the Empire League:

Century 55, Loara 27--Nikki Love scored 14 of her career-high 22 points in the second half and Aprile Powell added 15 points and 12 rebounds for host Century (16-6, 6-0).

El Dorado 46, Cypress 31--Jamie Nebeker scored 19 points and and Stephanie Patten had 14 for El Dorado (12-8, 5-1).

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 36, Buena Park 21--Cara Dykes scored nine points for Fullerton (5-15, 3-3), which led 18-6 at halftime.

La Habra 60, Sonora 48--Nori McCrystal had 14 points and 11 rebounds for visiting La Habra (12-10, 4-20, which took a 12-point lead at halftime. Sarah Fister had 16 points and 20 rebounds for Sonora (11-9, 4-2).

In the Golden West League:

Ocean View 55, Rosary 36--Anna Lembke had 21 points and eight rebounds to lead fifth-ranked Ocean View (18-4, 6-0).

Saddleback 44, Santa Ana 34--Pradjot Kaur scored 18 points to lead Saddleback (5-13, 2-4).

Westminster 59, Tustin 46--Janet Glasby scored 16 points and Erin Moore had 13 for visiting Westminster (16-6, 5-1).

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 96, Magnolia 23--Erin Kelly scored 20 points, Marissa Bradley had 17 and reserve Amanda Strum scored 12 for second-ranked Brea Olinda (18-2, 6-0), which tied the Southern Section record for most consecutive league victories at 97. Brea Olinda shares the record with Riverside Poly (1978-85).

Savanna 56, Anaheim 42--Sharon Pendergraft scored 15 of 21 points from three-point range to lead Savanna (7-13, 4-2).

In the Garden Grove league:

Pacifica 71, Los Amigos 39--Pacifica (16-6, 7-1) had four players score in double figures. Jayme Pendergast scored 18 points, Heather Green 15, Tracey Downs 14 and Mynden McCurdy 12.

Rancho Alamitos 50, Bolsa Grande 30--Eurydyka Ciejka had 11 points and 11 rebounds and Araceli Hernandez added 10 points and 11 rebounds for Rancho Alamitos (10-11, 7-1).

Santiago 44, Garden Grove 37--Stacey Trujillo scored 12 of her 23 points in the first quarter to help Santiago (12-9, 5-3) to a 14-point halftime lead.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 60, Estancia 31--Whitney Houser scored 16 points and Tayyiba Haneef added 15 points and 11 rebounds for No. 1-ranked Laguna Hills (19-3, 6-0).

University 64, Laguna Beach 35--Monique Mathews had 20 points and 13 rebounds to lead University (9-12, 1-5). Jerri Armendariz had 22 points and seven assists for University.

Costa Mesa 56, Aliso Niguel 50--Koo Kim scored 12 of her 16 points off three-pointers to lead second-place Costa Mesa (15-8, 5-1).

In the Sea View league:

Santa Margarita 57, Newport Harbor 48--Danielle Bennett had 15 points, six rebounds and six steals for Santa Margarita (16-6, 4-2).
