Public Invited to Give Blood at Library
The Orange County chapter of the American Red Cross is sponsoring a blood drive at the Newport Beach Central Library from 11 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. today to help meet severe shortages, officials said.
There is barely a day’s supply of Group O blood types in the Red Cross depot, officials said. Type O is the most common type in the general population and must be used in many emergency transfusions.
Blood shortages traditionally occur at this time each year because people go away for the holidays and miss donations or become too sick to give blood, officials said.
Donors must be age 17 or older, weigh at least 110 pounds, in good health and not at risk for HIV and AIDS.
Those who cannot attend the drive can make an appointment to give blood elsewhere by calling (800) GIVE-LIFE.
The Newport library is at 1000 Avocado Ave. Information: (714) 245-2604.
