Two more members of Santa Margarita’s Division V championship team have committed to colleges, Coach Jim Hartigan said Monday.

Running back Billy Newman, who rushed for 2,309 yards and 24 touchdowns in 257 carries, is headed to Washington State, and defensive lineman Bryce Jackson will accept a scholarship to Fresno State, Hartigan said.

In helping Santa Margarita to a 13-1 record, Newman was named the Division V and Sea View League player of the year.

Jackson, like Newman a three-year starter and a first-team all-league pick, had 25 tackles (six for losses), seven sacks, forced one fumble and recovered one fumble.

Orange Lutheran wide receiver Mike Crawford has made an oral commitment to attend Texas Christian this fall, Coach Jim Kunau said.

As part of the 11-2 Orange Lutheran team that won the Olympic League and reached the Division X semifinals, Crawford established school single-season records in receptions (75), receiving yardage (1,366) and touchdown catches (19). He finished his career as Orange Lutheran’s all-time receiving leader, with 148 catches for 2,776 yards and 34 touchdowns. Crawford was also named to the All-Southern Section Division X first team and The Times all-county second team.

Troy running back and linebacker Kyion Grayes has decided to attend Arizona State this fall, Coach John Turek said. Grayes, who will switch to defensive back, also considered Fresno State and San Diego State.

In leading Troy to a share of the Freeway League title and Division VIII quarterfinals, Grayes rushed for 1,728 yards and 21 touchdowns in 255 carries. He was named the Freeway League player of the year, and was also chosen to the All-Southern Section Division VIII first team.
