SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Steve Jones, whose triumph in last year’s U.S. Open capped his comeback from a 1991 dirt-bike accident, shot a nine-under-par 62 Thursday for a two-stroke lead over Nick Price at the Phoenix Open.
Jones was two shots off the tournament and course record of 60 set by Grant Waite last year. Jones sank birdie putts of 1 1/2, 8, 5, 30, 25, 20 and 1 feet. He also chipped in from 40 feet on the fifth hole and two-putted from 25 feet on No. 15, a short par five.
Defending champion Phil Mickelson missed putts of eight feet or less on five consecutive holes. After blowing par putts on Nos. 7 and 8 and birdie putts on 9, 10 and 11, he was one under on the TPC of Scottsdale course and finished there with a 70.
Tiger Woods, playing for the first time since he won the Mercedes Championships two weeks ago, birdied the last hole to finish at 68.
