Knight and Stanford Are Back Up to Speed

Guard Brevin Knight, slowed by a sore hip in Stanford’s stunning loss at Oregon State last Saturday, was back in high gear in the second half of the No. 17-ranked Cardinal’s 78-67 Pacific 10 Conference victory over visiting Washington on Thursday.

Knight scored 17 of his game-high 26 points in a second half in which Stanford, 12-3 overall and 5-2 in conference, led by as many as 21 points. Washington (10-4, 3-3) was tied with Stanford at halftime.

Stanford 7-foot-1 center Tim Young, who scored only five points in the 86-77 loss to Oregon State, had 20, while Washington’s 7-foot center Todd MacCulloch scored six.

Arizona 99, Oregon State 48--The Wildcats (11-4, 4-2) handed the Beavers (5-10, 1-5) their worst loss ever at Tucson.

Oregon State’s previous worst loss was a 100-56 defeat to Arizona at Tucson on Jan. 29, 1994. The Wildcats have won 14 in a row and 26 of the last 27 against the Beavers.

Arizona led, 41-20, at halftime as Oregon State missed 17 of its last 19 shots. The Beavers finished with 32% shooting.

Arizona had four double-figure scorers, led by freshman guard Mike Bibby at 20 points. Oregon State freshman guard Corey Benjamin, who scored 26 points in the victory over Stanford, had four points on two-of-eight shooting.

California 77, Washington State 75--Guard Prentice McGruder’s layup with 1:56 left in the second overtime gave the Golden Bears (13-5, 4-3) the lead for good against the Cougars (10-7, 2-4) at Berkeley.

California missed three of five free throws after McGruder’s basket had provided a 75-73 lead. On Washington State’s final possession, guard Isaac Fontaine’s twisting jumper from the free throw line rimmed in and out.

Guard Ed Gray had his third consecutive 30-point game for California, while Fontaine led Washington State with 24 points.

Washington State forward Rodrigo de la Fuente made a jumper from the corner with 3.3 seconds left for the final points of regulation, and Cougar freshman forward Beau Archibald’s three-point basket forced a second overtime.

Oregon 76, Arizona 51--The Ducks (11-4, 2-4) took advantage of 27% shooting by the Sun Devils (9-9, 1-5) at Tempe, Ariz., to end a losing streak at four games.

Center Kyle Milling made his first six shots in a first half in which Oregon went on a 17-0 run and took a 41-20 lead at halftime. Milling had 14 points and 10 rebounds.
