Rodriguez Deal May Increase Piazza’s Price
Ivan Rodriguez of the Texas Rangers became the highest-paid catcher in baseball history Sunday when he avoided arbitration by signing a one-year, $6.65-million contract.
It is the richest one-year deal in history and the most ever paid a catcher for a single season.
The contract could have significant bearing on Dodger catcher Mike Piazza’s negotiations. Piazza is expected to submit a record arbitration salary figure of about $7 million Tuesday if he does not reach a settlement today on an expected two-year contract.
Piazza is expected to eclipse the record $6.5 million arbitration request by pitcher Jack McDowell in 1994.
The Dodgers have given Panamanian outfielder Omar Moreno, Jr., the son of the former major league player, a signing bonus worth at least $750,000.
