3 More California Hotels Get 5 Stars

The Mobil Travel Guide doubled the number of California lodgings with its highest rating, five stars, for 1997 but continues to list only one five-star restaurant in the state, L’Orangerie in Los Angeles.
The added five-star lodgings, announced last week, are the Beverly Hills Hotel & Bungalows, Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles and Chateau du Sureau in Oakhurst. Retaining their five stars are the Peninsula in Beverly Hills and the Ritz-Carltons in Laguna Nigel and San Francisco.
There is quite a bit of overlap between the Mobil five-star list and the American Automobile Assn. five-diamond awards announced in November. The Peninsula, the Chateau du Sureau and both Ritz-Carltons are on the AAA list, which in addition includes the Ritz-Carlton Marina del Rey and the Four Seasons in Newport Beach. The AAA did not award five diamonds to the Beverly Hills Hotel or Hotel Bel-Air.
The AAA grants five diamonds to five California restaurants, including L’Orangerie. The others are the Belvedere in the Peninsula, Erna’s Elderberry House in Oakhurst, the Campton Place Restaurant in San Francisco and the dining room of the Ritz-Carlton in San Francisco.
