The Ventura Mariners minor league hockey team...

The Ventura Mariners minor league hockey team will play the Utah Grizzlies tonight at 7 in the opener of a three-game Western States Hockey League series at the Easy Street Arena in Simi Valley.

The teams play at 7 tonight, with another 7 p.m. game Saturday and a 1:45 p.m. face-off on Sunday.

The Mariners (14-3), a USA Hockey Junior B team of players 16 to 20 years old, are in second place in the WSHL standings, two points ahead of the third-place Grizzlies (12-6-1) and one point behind the Flagstaff (Ariz.) Mountaineers (14-4-1).

In high school action, boys’ basketball takes center stage tonight when sixth-ranked Canoga Park plays host to Palisades at 7 p.m. in a nonleague game.

Canoga Park features Carloes Harper, who is averaging 26.2 points a game and David Redmond, who leads the region with an average of 6.2 blocked shots and ranks second in rebounding with an average of 14.2.
