Sather Leads Eagles to Title of the Concordia Invitational

Concordia’s Angela Sather made eight of 16 shots from the field and scored 17 points to lead the Eagles to a 76-66 victory over Concordia (Ore.) in the championship game of the Concordia Eagle Invitational Saturday night in Irvine.

Sather was selected most valuable player of the tournament.

Guard Dinah Shah had 14 points and six assists for the Eagles.

Amy Twigg finished with 12 points and six blocked shots for the Cavaliers.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Chapman 64, Washington (Md.) 63--Chapman led by nine at the half and then held on as the visitors outscored the Panthers, 36-28, in the second half. Lyndsay Brown, Melissa Lopez and Flo Luppani each scored nine points for Chapman.

In the championship of the UC San Diego Tournament:

Southern California College 83, UC San Diego 81 (OT)--Eric Walker scored a game-high 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds for SCC (10-4) in the championship game.

Teammate Terence Wilborn, who finished with 24 points and 13 rebounds, was selected the tournament’s most valuable player.

In the Concordia men’s basketball tournament:

The Master’s 92, Concordia 72--Mike Penberthy made eight three-pointers and scored 33 points as The Master’s won the championship.

Rick Haywood scored 27 points for Concordia (5-8).

Wisconsin Lutheran 72, Pacific Christian 55--Axel Margaritha and Josh Whelihan each scored 15 points for Pacific Christian (2-16). Margaritha also had 15 rebounds.

Kon Knueppel scored 15 points and had 14 rebounds for Wisconsin Lutheran (7-3).

In the UC Santa Cruz tournament:

Chapman 78, UC Santa Cruz 72--Greg Evans scored 17 points in a consolation game for Chapman (10-4). Derek Mitchell and Wayemon Powell each scored 11 points for Chapman.

In nonconference men’s volleyball:

UC Irvine 3, California 2--Sophomore setter Steve Cavella had 55 assists as UC Irvine defeated Cal in the season opener, 15-3, 9-15, 10-15, 15-1, 15-12. The victory is the first for first-year Coach Charlie Brande.

Chris Harger had 20 kills and six blocks for the Anteaters (1-0).
