Zapatistas Mark Revolt’s Anniversary
Mexico’s Zapatista movement commemorated the third anniversary of its rebellion with mock battles and a vow to continue fighting for Indian rights. Nearly 1,000 people attended the celebration in La Realidad, several hours by dirt road east of the town of Las Margaritas in Chiapas state. The Zapatista National Liberation Army staged similar celebrations in four other towns it controls near the Guatemalan border. The Zapatistas rebelled Jan. 1, 1994, to press demands for greater Indian rights and more democracy in Mexico. At least 145 people died before a truce was called, and peace talks have continued since April 1995.
