Kansas Triumphant in Vaughn’s Return
Pre-season All-America Jacque Vaughn made a welcomed return to top-ranked Kansas’ lineup Monday night, shouting “I’m back, I’m back†after an assist led to a three-point play in the second half, as the Jayhawks beat Division II Washburn, 90-65, at Lawrence, Kan.
Vaughn, in uniform for the first time since tearing ligaments in his right wrist in a pickup game Sept. 10, finished with eight points and five assists.
No. 4 Iowa State 66, Texas-Pan American 42--Dedric Willoughby scored 18 points and Kelvin Cato blocked a school-record 11 shots for the Cyclones (9-0) at Ames, Iowa. Ivan Ostarcevic led Texas-Pan American (2-7) with 17 points.
No. 5 Clemson 73, Marshall 57--Terrell McIntyre had 11 of his 14 points in the second half in the Tigers’ first game since cracking the top five.
McIntyre had three baskets, including two three-point baskets, as Clemson (11-1) turned a one-point game into a blowout at Clemson, S.C.
No. 6 Cincinnati 80, Southeast Missouri 57--The Bearcats (6-2) capitalized on guard Damon Flint’s defensive game to win their opener in the Puerto Rico Holiday Classic at San Juan.
Flint turned three first-half steals into dunks as the Bearcats built a big lead.
Pittsburgh 85, No. 8 Michigan 78--Jason Maile was five for six from three-point range and had 24 points to lead the Panthers (7-6) at the Rainbow Classic at Honolulu.
Michigan (9-2) lost its opener to Memphis and then beat Washington State in the consolation round.
No. 9 Arizona 93, Pennsylvania 51--Michael Dickerson scored 21 points and Jason Terry added 19 as the Wildcats (7-2) beat the Quakers at Tucson, Ariz., for their 12th consecutive Fiesta Bowl Classic championship.
No. 10 Villanova 87, N.C.-Wilmington 38--Tim Thomas and Alvin Williams each scored 14 points for the Wildcats (10-1) at Villanova, Pa.
Jason Lawson added 11 points for Villanova, which out-rebounded the Seahawks, 43-21. Oleg Kojenets, with 12 points, was the only player in double figures for Wilmington (5-7).
No. 13 Duke 104, Western Carolina 54--Greg Newton had 25 points and 10 rebounds in only 28 minutes to lead the Blue Devils at Durham, N.C. Ricky Price set the tempo for Duke (9-2) with four three-pointers in the opening 5:09 and finished with 20 points.
Georgia 73, No. 19 Maryland 65--The Bulldogs (11-1) made two key three-point shots in overtime to defeat the Terrapins (11-1) in the final of the Rainbow Classic in Honolulu. Late Sunday, Maryland defeated Hawaii, 76-59.
TOURNAMENTS
Rainbow Classic: Anthony Carter scored Hawaii’s final 14 points, 10 on free throws, and the Rainbows (8-2) beat Memphis, 67-60, in the third-place game. . . . Washington State (8-3) was led by 13 points apiece from Carlos Daniel and Rod de la Fuente in a 68-52 victory over Northwestern (5-6) in the seventh-place game.
Puerto Rico Holiday Classic: Coleco Buie scored the last seven points of a 9-0 second-half run that lifted unbeaten Southwest Missouri State (9-0) to an 86-71 victory over Fresno State (7-5). . . . In other first-round games: Venson Hamilton scored on a dunk to break a tie at 56, as Nebraska (7-2) survived a late scare by Old Dominion (7-3) in a 72-66 victory by the Cornhuskers, and Antonio Daniels scored 23 points in a 75-59 victory by Bowling Green (6-2) over Mississippi State (5-6).
Seton Hall-Meadowlands: Shaheen Holloway and Levell Sanders each made one of two free throws in the final 18 seconds to give host Seton Hall a 72-70 victory over Rhode Island (6-3) at East Rutherford, N.J.
OTHER GAMES
West Virginia (7-1) turned a three-point deficit into a 20-point lead and a 90-65 victory over Duquesne (3-6) at Pittsburgh. Three technical fouls on Duquesne Coach Scott Edgar resulted in his automatic ejection. . . . Marius Janulis scored 22 points and Elvir Ovcina added 14, as flu-bitten Syracuse (8-4) struggled to 75-55 victory over visiting Maryland-Eastern Shore (4-4). . . . Duane Spencer had 17 points to lead LSU (7-6) to a 64-43 victory over Lafayette College (4-7) at Baton Rouge, La., and the Tigers’ fourth consecutive victory came without freshman Lester Earl, who told Coach Dale Brown Sunday that he was unhappy and wanted to quit. . . . Corey Louis came off the bench to score 22 points, leading Florida State (8-1) to an 87-68 victory over Butler (6-5) at Tallahassee, Fla. . . . Alexander Kuehl scored 21 points as North Carolina-Charlotte (7-3) won, 76-59, over George Washington (5-4) at Charlotte, N.C. . . . Curtis Staples had 30 points as Virginia (8-3) shot 42.9% from long range in a 76-66 victory over Delaware (7-4) at Charlottesville, Va. . . . Melvin Watson had 17 points to lead South Carolina (6-5) to a 100-62 win over Furman (4-6) at Columbia, S.C. . . .
