CASTAIC — A fight at Pitchess Detention Center over a candy bar sent two inmates to the hospital Saturday--one with serious cuts and another with a broken arm, authorities said.
Three other inmates suffered minor injuries, said Deputy Elsa Avila, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The brawl started at 3 p.m. as a dispute between two of the inmates over a candy bar, according to Avila. The dormitory confrontation quickly escalated to involve about 20 white and Latino inmates, Avila said.
“It was along racial lines,” she said.
The two inmates with serious injuries were taken to County-USC Medical Center, while the other three were treated for minor injuries at the detention center’s clinic, she said.
Deputies stopped the fight after about two minutes, Avila said. No deputies were hurt, she said.
Saturday’s fight was the latest in a series of racial brawls at the county facility in the past several months.
