Bustamante to Speak at Lunch Fund-Raiser
Assembly Speaker Cruz Bustamante (D-Fresno) will speak in Oxnard on Saturday at a fund-raising luncheon set up to help retire the campaign debt of unsuccessful Democratic Assembly candidate Jess Herrera.
Bustamante, who was picked earlier this month to lead the Assembly, will join other Democratic officeholders for the $50-per-person luncheon from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the home of Oxnard Mayor Manuel Lopez and Irma Lopez.
Herrera said he has a $16,000 campaign debt left over from his unsuccessful bid to challenge Assemblyman Nao Takasugi (R-Oxnard). Takasugi easily won reelection to his third and final term in the 37th Assembly District, which stretches from Port Hueneme and Oxnard to Camarillo and Thousand Oaks.
Herrera, a longshoreman and Oxnard Harbor District commissioner, said he may make a second attempt for the Assembly seat when term limits force Takasugi to retire.
