Quartz Hill coughed and Hart wheezed.

Two of what are expected to be the best girls’ basketball teams in the area provided a dud of a nonleague game Tuesday night at Quartz Hill.

Except for the finish.

That’s when Kenya Corley’s layup with 29 seconds left and her two free throws 17 seconds later gave Quartz Hill a 38-36 victory.

The Rebels (7-1) made 32% of their shots and faltered leading, 27-16, in the third quarter.

Hart (3-3) shot 20% but outrebounded Quartz Hill, 47-27.

“We were choking, missing gimmies,†Hart Coach Dave Munroe said. “Varsity players don’t miss two-footers.â€

A basket by Jelene Daney, who had 11 points, gave the Indians a 36-34 lead with 1 minute 16 seconds left.

After Corley tied it with 29 seconds left, April Garza came up with a loose ball as Hart was setting up a last shot.

Garza passed to Corley who was fouled by Melissa Harrison. At that point, Rebels Coach Steve Lankford told Corley to finish it.

“I told Kenya it was time to step forward,†Lankford said. “[Hart] had shut us down. We played just good enough to win.â€

Corley scored 13 points after being shut out in the first half. Garza added 12 for Quartz Hill.

Harrison had 11 points and 18 rebounds for Hart, which learned that standout forward Candace Boller plans to return to the Indians in January.

Boller quit the team two weeks ago because of a conflict with club volleyball.
