No. 1 Not Stanford’s Dominion

NORFOLK, Va. — It was like old times at Old Dominion Field House on Tuesday. A full house was chanting “We’re No. 1” as time ran out on a beaten opponent.
The Old Dominion women’s basketball team is No. 4, but after a stunning 83-66 victory against previously unbeaten and top-ranked Stanford, No. 1 may not be far off.
Nyree Roberts led four players in double figures with 19 points and the Lady Monarchs used ball-hawking defense, dominance inside and the noise of a sellout crowd of 4,855 to keep the Cardinal from making a run.
Old Dominion (8-1) forced 28 turnovers, grabbed 23 of its 35 rebounds at the offensive end and committed 10 fewer fouls than the Cardinal (9-1).
Ticha Penichiero and Clarisse Machanguana each added 16 points each for Old Dominion and Aubrey Eblin had 12. Penichiero also had 10 assists.
