While USC was running up the score, 107-45, in Sunday’s victory over UC Irvine, Tennessee defeated Memphis, 57-47. It was a much-needed victory for the Volunteers, who had lost consecutive games to Tennessee Tech and Penn State, the latter, 42-41, in overtime. Tennessee Coach Kevin O’Neill has little to work with on the offensive end, but will run 10 players at the Trojans, the best being sophomore guard Brandon Wharton, the only Volunteer with a double-digit scoring average (17). USC plays its fourth consecutive road game, and a thin frontcourt is aided by the return of 6-foot-7 Anthony White, who sat out the first five games because he didn’t transfer enough credits from junior college. He should get considerable playing time backing up Gary Williams at power forward and David Crouse at center when USC goes to a smaller, more athletic lineup.
