Calvary Chapel Wrestlers Win in Ohio

Calvary Chapel, ranked second in the country in Wrestling USA’s preseason poll, rallied to defeat fourth-ranked Walsh Jesuit (Ohio), 36-32, in the Ironman Invitational Thursday in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.
Walsh Jesuit led early, 23-21, but Arsen Aleksanyan, Ty Wilcox and Mike Bigrigg won the next three matches to give Calvary Chapel a 36-23 lead.
Calvary Chapel lost the first three matches to fall behind, 14-0, but pins by Tino Archuleta (125), Jay McGuffin (135) and a 7-5 overtime victory by Burt Pierson (130) put the Eagles up by one.
Calvary Chapel’s Joe Calavitta then suffered a rare loss at 140 pounds when he was beaten, 10-5, by Sonny Marchette.
In a nonleague match:
Fullerton 54, Western 23--Heavyweight Ray Maza, Jeremy Moreno (160 pounds) and Jesus Becerra (189) pinned their opponents to help Fullerton (3-0) remain undefeated.
In the Converse Classic boys’ basketball tournament:
Mission Viejo 80, Capistrano Valley 75 (OT)--Commander King scored nine of his 21 points in overtime for Mission Viejo (5-2), which made 14 of 18 free throws in overtime to seal the pool-play victory.
Gabe Burt scored 20 points and Dan Galvanoni added 20 for Capistrano Valley (0-3), which trailed by eight points heading into fourth quarter, but used two three-pointers by Galvanoni and one by Mike Stowell to tie it at 63-63 with four seconds left.
In the La Quinta tournament:
Santa Ana Valley 68, Lakewood 51--Tim Werdel scored 22 points and Milton Fields had 17 for Santa Ana Valley, which outscored Lakewood, 45-28, in the second half of a pool-play game.
In the Vista tournament:
Edison 79, Riverside La Sierra 69--Dimitri Karnezis had 31 points and 12 rebounds to help Edison (2-0) advance to today’s semifinals against San Diego Horizon.
In the Estancia girls’ basketball tournament:
Edison 54, Century 49--Shauna Steward had 22 points, eight assists and five steals to put Edison (4-0) into the championship game against Huntington Beach, a 53-36 winner over Saddleback. Alli Napier scored 25 points for Century (5-2).
In the Gold Coast Classic at Santa Barbara San Marcos High:
Westminster 55, Foothill 52--Erin Moore made a three-pointer with 12 seconds remaining for Westminster (4-0) in a second-round victory.
In the first round of the Lakewood Artesia/Brethren Christian Tournament:
Calvary Chapel 46, Manhattan Beach Mira Costa 38--Christy Ring had 17 points and eight assists for Calvary Chapel (5-2).
In the Palmer (Alaska) girls’ basketball tournament:
Marina 55, Palmer 42--Natalie Nakase had 18 points and five steals and Marisa Emde scored 17 points for Marina (5-0), which defeated the top-ranked team in Alaska in a first-round game.
In nonleague girls’ soccer:
Capistrano Valley 2, Esperanza 0--Liz Delgado had an assist and a goal to lead the top-ranked Cougars (3-1) over the No. 8 Aztecs (2-2) at Capistrano Valley. Delgado assisted on a goal by Haleigh Roach in the second minute, then scored herself in the 39th minute.
Century 1, Savanna 0--Maria Gomez scored the only goal in the 44th minute to give Century (1-2) its first victory of the season.
El Toro 2, Mission Viejo 2--Ashley Dixon scored two goals and keeper Melody Derloshon had eight saves for El Toro (1-1-1).
Los Alamitos 2, Long Beach Wilson 1--Cyndi Tredway and Brittany Savelkoul each scored first-half goals for the host Griffins (5-1).
In nonleague girls’ water polo:
Savanna 16, Santa Ana Valley 7--Chrissy Holt scored 11 goals for Savanna (2-2).
