5 Tonight at Coliseum
OFFENSE
* QUARTERBACKS: Julio Briones (5-foot-8, 160 pounds) is the reason Wilson is playing for the title. Briones has passed for 27 touchdowns and nearly 3,000 yards, averaging 225 yards a game. Van Nuys’ Robert Williamson has had little reason to put the ball in the air. Good thing: He’s completed only 32% of his 139 passes for 705 yards and five touchdowns. EDGE TO: WILSON.
* RUNNING BACKS: Wilson favors a single-back offense with most of the running handled by Briones and Jarod Smith (6-1, 190), who have combined for 1,017 yards rushing. Van Nuys’ Carlos Mack averages 5.7 yards a carry and has rushed for 1,351 yards and 18 touchdowns. EDGE TO: VAN NUYS.
* RECEIVERS: Wilson’s Carlos Diaz (5-8, 160) and Brandon Clay (6-0, 170) are productivity personified. Diaz has 60 catches for 1,297 yards and 11 touchdowns. Clay has 55 catches for 820 yards and nine touchdowns. Van Nuys is not a passing team. Only Fernando Arias, with 12, has more than seven catches. EDGE TO: WILSON.
* LINE: Jeremiah Wilson (6-5, 285) is a Division I recruit and anchors a Wilson line that averages 6-feet and 238 pounds. Van Nuys right guard Grigor Boyadzhyan is only 5-7 and 235 pounds, but he’s a bundle of strength. The Wolves average 6-1, 229 pounds across. EDGE TO: WILSON.
DEFENSE
* LINE: Wilson’s Michael Gonzalez (6-0, 220), Francisco Garcia (5-11, 195) and Mario Zepeda (5-11, 185) rely on quickness, as does Van Nuys with Boyadzhyan, Alex Rodriguez (6-1, 245) and Jason Jones (6-3, 255). EDGE TO: VAN NUYS.
* LINEBACKERS: Inside linebacker Eric Wagner (5-9, 170) is Wilson’s leading tackler. He gets help from John Segura (6-2, 235), Randy Romero (5-9, 175) and Jorge Hernandez (5-9, 170). Van Nuys, which has a turnover ratio of plus-14 in the last eight games, sets up a little taller with David Melo (6-3, 215), Ryan Boyd (6-2, 215) and Gerardo Garcia-Montes (5-10, 215). EDGE TO: VAN NUYS.
* SECONDARY: Wilson’s Clay, Smith and Diaz have all returned interceptions for touchdowns. Williamson, Van Nuys’ free safety, has four of the team’s seven interceptions, one returned for a touchdown. Expecting an air raid, the Wolves will use five defensive backs. EDGE TO: WILSON.
* KICKERS: Jesus Ruiz has made 39 of 46 conversion kicks and five of six field-goal attempts. He averages 37.5 yards per punt and has a long of 65. Van Nuys’ Arias is one of the area’s best. He has made 10 of 13 field-goal attempts and is perfect in 25 conversion kicks. He averages 37 yards a punt. EDGE TO: VAN NUYS.
