Mills’ 29 Leads Northridge Women

Tammie Mills scored 29 points to help the Cal State Northridge women’s basketball team overcome a one-point halftime deficit and upset Oregon State, 62-53, in a nonconference game Friday night at Northridge.

The Matadors (1-2) trailed, 32-31, at the half but outplayed the Beavers (1-1) in the second half behind Mills, who made 13 of 18 shots. In addition, she finished with team-high totals of seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Lisa Vaillancourt had 10 points and six steals for Northridge, and Sarah Bell added six points.

Kris Walsh had 14 points and four blocks for Oregon State.

In another women’s basketball game:

The Master’s 61, Montana Tech 54--Laura Frelich scored 19 points and Kim DeVries had 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Mustangs in a nonconference game at Master’s.

Frelich made seven of 15 shots. As a team, the Mustangs shot 48% (19 of 40).

Elizabeth Hansell had eight points and six rebounds for Master’s.

Wendi Piippo led Montana Tech with 15 points, and Dee Dee Berger added 14.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Master’s 77, Missouri-St. Louis 71--Center Leo Gorauskas had 23 points and 12 rebounds for the Mustangs in a come-from-behind victory in the Cal State Bakersfield Tournament.

Master’s trailed, 42-35, at halftime but hit 13 of 19 free throws in the second half while Missouri-St. Louis attempted only six second-half free throws. Gorauskas made five of seven free throws in the second half, and guard Jerome Joseph made six of eight.

Cerritos 78, Canyons 68--Kevin King scored 19 points in a losing effort for the Cougars (0-3) in a nonconference game at Canyons.

The Cougars trailed, 39-32, at the half. Woodley Polynice scored 13 points for Canyons.

Cerritos (7-0) was led by Tony Harvey with 14 points and Jason Nicholas with 13.
