St. Bonaventure’s One-Two Combination Decks Calabasas, 20-6

St. Bonaventure’s Teohua Sanchez and Pepe Villasenor have played catch since they were youngsters frolicking in an Oxnard park.

The pairing that once carved up opponents in pickup games and flag football dissected Calabasas, 20-6, Friday night in a Southern Section Division X quarterfinal at Ventura High.

Sanchez completed 20 of 26 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns. The 6-foot, 177-pound senior completed 15 of 19 passes in the first half as St. Bonaventure (10-1-1) built a 12-0 lead.

Villasenor, a 5-foot-7, 153-pound senior and the region’s leader in receptions the past two seasons, caught 11 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns.

The victory moves the Seraphs, third-seeded in the division, into a semifinal game next week against Orange Lutheran, which defeated St. Anthony, 21-6.

St. Bonaventure opened the scoring with two minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Seraphs drove 57 yards in 11 plays, with Sanchez and Villasenor hooking up for their first touchdown.

Villasenor, covered by Coyote linebacker Robby Coppola, initially ran a post route but made a sharp cut to the right side of the end zone and Sanchez delivered the ball from 15 yards.

A conversion run failed and St. Bonaventure led, 6-0.

Midway through the second quarter, Calabasas (8-4) drove to the Seraph nine, where a touchdown run by Peter Smith was nullified by a holding penalty.

An offside penalty against St. Bonaventure moved the ball to the four, where on third down and one, Calabasas quarterback Scott Quigley fumbled on a sneak.

Steve Chase recovered and the St. Bonaventure offense promptly began to drive.

Nine plays later, Villasenor beat Coyote cornerback Jimmy Nemoto on a deep slant and caught a 44-yard touchdown pass for a 12-0 lead with 4:50 to play in the half.

St. Bonaventure increased its lead to 20-0 with 1:12 to play in the third quarter. Sanchez bulled into the end zone from five yards, capping a seven-play, 51-yard drive.

Calabasas scored with 3:15 to play when Quigley threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Wang that finished a 15-play, 80-yard drive.

Quigley completed six of 13 passes for 72 yards and a touchdown.

Coppola rushed 21 times for 112 yards.

Andre Pinedo rushed for 59 yards in 16 carries for St. Bonaventure.

Tight end Joe Byrum caught four passes for 29 yards and carried four times for 42 yards.

In two meetings with Calabasas this season, St. Bonaventure won by a combined score of 51-9.
