A 1-year-old girl was seriously injured Friday when she and her mother were hit by a skydiver who was blown off course during a holiday jump over a Norwalk mall.

The child, who was not identified, was being held by her mother as shoppers gathered to watch several skydivers in holiday garb parachute to earth at the Norwalk Square Shopping Center.

A sudden gust caught one of the skydivers at landing time, knocking the chutist into the mother and child, a county Fire Department spokesman said.

The child was taken to Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, where she was listed in serious condition Friday night. Hospital spokesman Steve Rutledge said she had suffered a skull fracture but could go home as early as today if she continues to improve.

A sheriff’s spokesman said the Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident. It occurred during the annual “Jingle Bell Jump†to mark the opening of the Christmas shopping season.
