Pacific Defeats Long Beach State in Women’s Volleyball

Long Beach State’s bid to finish the regular season undefeated fell short Saturday night as Pacific swept the 49ers, 15-9, 15-10, 15-8, in women’s volleyball in front of 1,402 at the Pyramid. The loss ends Long Beach State’s best start in school history, 26-0.

With the victory, Pacific improved to 12-2 in the Big West Conference, 19-5 overall. Pacific remains a contender for the regular-season championship and the top seeding in the Big West Tournament.

Shawnee Hayes had 32 assists for the 49ers and Benishe Dillard led the team with 11 kills. Misty May, who missed the match along with Anja Grabovac, is still listed as day-to-day. Jessica Alvarado left after the first game with a finger injury.

Long Beach State (26-1, 13-1) hosts UC Irvine on Thursday and will attempt to clinch a tie for the Big West title.

In other Big West Conference women’s volleyball:

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 3, UC Irvine 0--Denise Dumble and Sarah Libecap each had nine kills for UC Irvine (6-21, 3-11) in a 15-2, 15-7, 15-10 loss.

UC Santa Barbara 3, CS Fullerton 0--Heather Bassett had 15 kills and 11 digs for the Titans (16-11, 6-8), who lost, 15-2, 15-2, 15-12.

In the Golden State Athletic Conference men’s soccer:

Azusa Pacific 2, Southern California College 1--Jason Roufs’ second goal two minutes into the second overtime proved to be the difference as host Azusa Pacific collected its first-ever conference championship title. Southern California College nearly won in regulation, but Cougar goalkeeper Jason Vlcek thwarted Michael Ditts’ penalty kick with 20 minutes left in regulation.

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s soccer:

CS Fullerton 2, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 0 (OT)--Alfred Partida and Sheldon Thomas each scored for CS Fullerton (10-4-5, 3-1-1) in the second period of overtime. The victory secures second place in the Pacific Division. The Titans must wait for the announcement of the NCAA tournament brackets Nov. 18 to see if they get an at-large berth.

In Big West Conference men’s swimming and diving:

UC Irvine 143, Cal State Northridge 89--Greg Niehaus swam a personal best in the 200-meter freestyle, winning with a time of 1:46.32. Rich Sarkisian won the 1,000-meter freestyle (9:58.23) and the 500-meter freestyle (4:54.70) for the Anteaters (1-4).

In Big West Conference women’s swimming and diving:

UC Irvine 129, Cal State Northridge 109--UC Irvine (1-4) won for the first time this season as Stacy Rosenberg won the 200-meter freestyle in 1:57.05. Carrie Rowe had a personal best in the 200-meter individual medley with a top finish of 2:16.29.

In nonconference water polo:

UC Irvine 13, Pepperdine 4--Sunny Hills graduate Omar Amr scored four goals in a nonconference victory for fifth-ranked UC Irvine. Teammate Ryan Baley scored three for the Anteaters (12-6).
