A 16-year-old burglary suspect was critically wounded in a scuffle with an armed campus official at the exclusive Harvard-Westlake School in Studio City early Saturday, police said.
The wounded youth was air-lifted to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, where he underwent several hours of surgery. A bullet entered his lower back, a Los Angeles City Fire Department spokesman said.
The incident began about 6:30 a.m., when neighbors of the private institution called the 54-year-old campus official, who lives nearby, to report “crashing sounds” at the school, LAPD Det. Mike Coffey said.
The official, armed with a semiautomatic handgun, entered a campus building’s back door, which had been pried open. Inside, he “heard footsteps and was confronted by the burglar,” and a fight ensued.
The youth apparently was not armed, the detective said. Principal Thomas Hudnut said the boy is not a student at the school.
