Oilers Win on Smyth’s Hat Trick
Ryan Smyth scored three goals, including the go-ahead score with 2:14 left and an empty-netter with eight seconds remaining, as Edmonton beat the Maple Leafs, 4-2, at Toronto Tuesday night for their third consecutive victory.
The Oilers’ 3-0 start is their best since 1985-86, when they opened with five consecutivewins.
Jason Arnott also scored for the Oilers. Mike Craig and Mats Sundin scored for the Leafs.
Florida 1, N.Y. Rangers 1--Adam Graves scored with 32 seconds left in regulation, and Glenn Healy made 31 saves to earn the Rangers the tie in the Panthers’ home opener.
Tom Fitzgerald scored for Florida.
Hartford 7, Pittsburgh 3--Geoff Sanderson scored two goals and set up another and Jeff O’Neill tallied twice, leading the Whalers over the Penguins at Hartford.
Andrei Nikolishin had three assists for the Whalers.
Colorado 6, San Jose 0--Patrick Roy recorded his 31st career shutout, the most among activegoalies, as the Avalanche won at home.
Dallas 5, Washington 3--Mike Modano had two goals and two assists and Jere Lehtinen added a goal and two assists as the Stars beat the Capitals at Dallas.
