LA HABRA — Running back Jesse Giovannetti missed last week’s victory over Whittier because he had a viral infection.
In his first game back, the La Habra junior sparked the offense to a 35-6 victory over Whittier Christian Thursday night at La Habra High School.
Giovannetti rushed 22 times for 146 yards and scored two first-half touchdowns.
“Giovannetti gives us explosiveness out of the backfield,” Highlander Coach Rick Milhizer said.
La Habra (2-0) scored early on a 60-yard pass from Robert Morales to Chris Falcioni. Giovannetti then scored on touchdown runs of 25 and one yards to give the Highlanders a 21-0 lead at halftime.
La Habra struggled in the third quarter and when Giovannetti fumbled a punt return, Whittier Christian (1-1) recovered on the Highlanders’ 14-yard line. Two plays later, Brian Algorri scored on a 15-yard reverse, cutting the lead to 21-6.
But the Heralds scored late in the quarter, when a fumbled snap was recovered by La Habra on Whittier Christian’s 14-yard line. Two penalties drove La Habra back to the 21-yard line, where Morales connected with Paul Summers for his second touchdown pass of the night.
Morales closed out La Habra’s scoring with a one-yard quarterback sneak with 1:19 left in the game.
