Finley’s Homer in 10th Wins It for Padres

Steve Finley hit a leadoff home run in the 11th inning and the San Diego Padres defeated the Giants, 2-1, Monday night at San Francisco.

The Padres remained one-half game behind the Dodgers in the National League West Division and lead Montreal by two games in the wild-card race.

Padre reliever Trevor Hoffman struck out Rich Aurilia with the bases loaded to end the game, sending the Giants to their sixth consecutive loss. They have dropped 10 in a row to San Diego.

Barry Bonds hit his 40th homer of the season for the Giants to join Hank Aaron and Jose Canseco as the only players in major league history with 40 homers and 30 stolen bases in a season.

Atlanta 5, New York 2--Denny Neagle won for the first time with the Braves and drove in two runs in a four-run sixth inning at New York.

Lance Johnson of the Mets got his 20th triple of the season, becoming the first National League player to reach the mark since Willie Mays in 1957 and the first major leaguer since Willie Wilson in 1985.

Neagle (15-8), acquired from Pittsburgh on Aug. 28, gave up seven hits, struck out three and walked three in his first complete game with the Braves.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

New York 10, Toronto 0--Tim Raines hit two three-run homers on his 37th birthday as the Yankees won for the sixth time on their seven-game trip.

Jimmy Key (12-10) started off with 5 2/3 perfect innings at Toronto and wound up giving up two hits in eight innings.

Cleveland 4, Chicago 3--Kevin Seitzer hit a go-ahead single and Jack McDowell survived a shaky start as the Indians rallied to defeat the White Sox at Chicago.

McDowell (12-9) gave up nine hits against his former team. Wilson Alvarez (15-9) gave up four runs and eight hits in six innings.

Seattle 6, Texas 0--Jamie Moyer pitched eight scoreless innings and the Mariners moved up in their race for a playoff spot with a victory at Seattle, their fifth in a row. Moyer (12-3) gave up four hits, struck out five and walked two.
