OUTLOOK
Chandler, a transfer from Murrieta Valley High, should lead the Flames into a new era. As everyone else was starting practice last year, the Flames were waiting for a coach. Owens was hired a week into the season, taking over for Lyn Lumley, who left for Lewis & Clark College in Oregon. Despite the late start, the Flames won more games last year than they had in the previous two years combined. “I realized these kids have heart,†Owens said. This season, the Flames will run the ball a lot with Chandler. Smith will be the starting quarterback and his primary target will be Mack. On the offensive and defensive line, they will be average. “We’re OK for this division. We’re a little bit smaller but we make up for it in speed,†Owens said. Chandler, Smith and Hanger will be the starting linebackers. At defensive back Cervantes, Mader, Loop probably will start but they’ll have some competition from younger players.
