BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : Pitcher Ellis Could Be Record-Breaker
- Share via
General Manager Bill Bavasi knew so little about pitcher Robert Ellis when he acquired the right-hander from the Chicago White Sox for catcher Pat Borders on July 27, that the only description he could muster for Ellis was: “He’s an arm.”
Well, that arm will likely land the Angels in the major league record books this month.
When Ellis, one of five players called up from triple-A Vancouver today, makes his Angel debut, he’ll be the 28th Angel to pitch this season, breaking the record of 27 pitchers, shared by four teams.
Pitcher Jim Abbott, outfielder Darin Erstad, reliever Jeff Schmidt and first baseman Chris Pritchett were also called up.
The Angels also requested waivers on reliever Rich Monteleone for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release.
