Irvin Has Big Game for Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Sedrick Irvin, the cousin of Dallas Cowboy receiver Michael Irvin, scored four touchdowns in his first college game and Michigan State defeated Purdue, 52-14, in a Big Ten Conference opener on Saturday.
Irvin, a heralded recruit from Florida, scored on runs of 17, five and five yards and caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Todd Schultz.
The 6-foot, 210-pound tailback ran for 73 yards and also caught seven passes for 59 yards as a stand-in for last year’s top rusher, Marc Renaud, who has been declared academically ineligible.
Kicker Chris Gardner added field goals of 37, 49 and 43 yards.
Michigan State used a steady running game and Schultz’s passing in building a 28-0 lead.
Michigan State moved 87 yards in 10 plays, taking a 7-0 lead on Schultz’s pass to Irvin. Irvin’s 17-yard run made it 14-0.
Gardner kicked two field goals in the second quarter before Irvin capped a 63-yard, five-play drive with a five-yard run.
Irvin’s fourth touchdown came early in the third quarter.
