Six weeks ago, Frank Bruno was talking about a third title fight with Mike Tyson. On Friday, the 35-year-old boxer announced his retirement after learning he risked losing vision in one eye if he continued fighting.

Tyson all but ended Bruno’s career in March--in what turned out to be the Briton’s last fight. Tyson pummeled him and then knocked him out in the third round, taking Bruno’s World Boxing Council title in March at Las Vegas.

Bruno was advised to retire by Dr. David McLeod, who told him it was unlikely he would pass his eyesight standards to box in Britain, and might lose his vision in one eye with a blow to his head.

“I’ve had a good innings, I’m chilled,†Bruno said Friday. “We’ve all had a big cut of the cake. I’ve had my fair share and I don’t want to be greedy.â€

Bruno had 45 fights, won 40 and had 38 knockouts. He lost three title fights before winning the crown by beating Oliver McCall in a unanimous decision at Wembley on Sept. 2, 1995. He was only the third Briton to hold a world heavyweight title.
