Mother Teresa, the 86-year-old nun and Nobel Peace Prize laureate who has inspired the world with her dedication to helping the poor, is recovering this week after being hospitalized in Calcutta, India, with an irregular heartbeat and a lung infection.

“We are very hopeful, though she is not out of danger,†said Dr. Sandeep Lahiri, a Calcutta physician. He said she was strong enough to sit up in bed earlier this week for a few minutes--and to write a brief note that said, “I want to see sisters.â€

Mother Teresa, shown here in a 1993 photo, is the founder of the Society of the Missionaries of Charity and has worked among the poor in India since 1950. She once wrote, “To show great love for God and our neighbors we need not do great things. It is how much love we put in the doing that makes our offering something beautiful for God.â€
