Chick Seeks Cleanup of Transit Trash
Citing trash piles around city bus stops, Los Angeles City Councilwoman Laura Chick introduced a motion Friday instructing city and regional transit agencies to provide trash containers and trash pickup.
Because city and Metropolitan Transportation Authority buses do not allow food or drinks aboard, passengers are forced to leave containers at the bus stop, she said.
Many bus stops do not have trash containers and those that do are not emptied on a regular basis, Chick said.
“We’ve been getting calls as well as observing in the district piles of trash by bus stops,†she said.
Chick, who represents parts of the west San Fernando Valley, said she is also asking that new transit centers for rail lines include newspaper recycling bins.
The city’s Bureau of Street Maintenance provides trash pickup from many of the city’s 9,000 bus stops, but bureau staff have said they do not have the funds for additional trash pickup.
Chick’s motion asks city administrators and transit officials to come up with new funding for additional containers and trash pickup.
