Councilman Backs Transit Act Renewal
City Councilman Ronald Bates appeared Tuesday before a congressional subcommittee to urge renewal of a 1991 act that gives local officials a say in transportation decisions.
Bates testified in Washington in support of the federal government continuing to allow city, county, and state officials to assist in coordinating transportation on a larger scale.
“Roads, transit service and carpool lanes do not end at county or even state borders,†Bates said in a statement. “Transportation systems cannot be planned in a vacuum.â€
Bates testified before the House subcommittee which is reviewing the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act. The act carries a sunset clause and expires in September 1997.
The councilman is a member of the Southern California Assn. of Governments’ transportation committee and first vice president of the League of California Cities.
