Norma Montoya, a longtime Eastside resident, had her blood pressure checked. Yamillette, her 13-year-old daughter, was weighed and measured. Frank, her husband, was screened for diabetes.

“The results were fine,†Montoya said. “I was worried because diabetes runs in his family. I wanted him to get checked.â€

Montoya and her family were part of crowd of 1,000 who took advantage of the free services Saturday at “Unidos y Saludables,†an Eastside health and safety fair. It featured free medical screenings and bike safety education for children.

“We made our rounds,†Montoya said. “You could run up a pretty good bill if you see a doctor for separate appointments [for each test]. This way it’s quick and free.â€

The event, held at Centro Maravilla Community Center, is sponsored by the Multicultural Area Health Education Center and TOUCH (Team Outreach United for Community Health) East L.A.

TOUCH East L.A. is a community-based group that includes Santa Marta Hospital, Casa Maravilla Housing Project, social service agencies, churches and schools. The coalition provides health care, counseling and educational services for Eastside residents.
