Sonia S. Suk, 83, former Los Angeles city commissioner and community leader of Koreatown. Born in Pyongyang, Korea, Suk moved to Los Angeles in 1962 and established herself in the real estate business. Suk was chairwoman or president of more than 60 Korean American organizations locally and nationally, and worked to help found Los Angeles’ enclave known as Koreatown. Former Mayor Tom Bradley appointed her to the city’s Human Relations Commission in 1976, and she served until 1984. Koreatown recognized her contributions with a three-day official funeral observance. On July 8 in Los Angeles of a heart attack after hip surgery.
