Romania’s world champion women’s gymnastics team suffered a major blow because a serious injury to Anamaria Bican had left them one short, Coach Octavian Belu said.
Bican, third in the European junior championships in 1994, tore ligaments in her right knee while trying a vault during training in Atlanta on Saturday and will undergo surgery to rebuild the knee here on Monday, Belu said.
Belu said there was not enough time to fly in an alternate and get her acclimated, so Romania will use six gymnasts rather than the seven it is allowed.
