At a news conference before the event kicked off at 7 p.m., Dominique Brown of Dana Point said, “Tonight is exciting, and we want to keep a positive tone. We are looking in a direction of ‘Let’s fix it,’ not at what’s behind us.â€

Denise Brown added: “Tonight is about survival. We are having a speaker talk about how she survived domestic violence. Nobody hears from survivors--that’s why tonight will be so positive.â€

Established two years ago by the Browns in memory of their slain daughter, the foundation supports shelters for victims of domestic violence. In January, $168,000 was distributed to 78 shelters in 30 states, said Lou Brown, its treasurer.
