AFGHANISTAN : Premier Sworn In Amid Rebel Assault

Former government enemy Gulbuddin Hekmatyar was sworn in as Afghanistan’s new prime minister amid the deadliest rebel assault on Kabul, the Afghan capital, this year--a relentless barrage that killed more than 30 people and wounded at least 120. More than 100 rockets fired by the rebel Taliban militia pounded the city. Several landed near Kabul’s Intercontinental Hotel, killing one person and wounding three, just moments before Hekmatyar arrived to take the oath of office.
