CHARLES HILLINGER’S AMERICA: People and Places in All 50 States by Charles Hillinger (Capra Press: $16.95; 276 pp., illustrated, paperback original). Hillinger spent more than 45 years as a roving reporter for The Los Angeles Times, visiting people and places for “human interest” stories. His accounts of a longhorn cattle breeder in Texas, a Kahuna (shaman) in Hawaii and a security officer at Fort Knox display an old-fashioned grace. Unlike many contemporary reporters, Hillinger never treats his subjects as sideshow attractions or calls attention to himself.
