JetHawks Blow Past Stampede

Setting a season-high with 20 base hits on a hot windy night Saturday, the JetHawks kicked dust in the eyes of the San Bernardino Stampede, winning, 16-1, to remain in a first-place tie in the California League’s Southern Division.

Playing before the second-largest crowd of the season at the Hangar, 5,902, the JetHawks were led by catcher Scot Sealy, who had three doubles and three runs batted in. Leadoff hitter Marcus Sturdivant drove in four with a double and two singles.

The only starter not to get a hit was the team’s best hitter, Jose Cruz Jr.

Trey Moore (1-0), making his JetHawk debut, struck out three and walked none in seven innings. Pitching for Riverside last season, he was 14-6 with a 3.09 earned-run average.

But after struggling at double-A Port City at the start of the season, Moore was reassigned to the Cal League last week.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound left-hander had a 1-6 record and 7.71 ERA before his demotion.

Stampede starter Casey Deskins (2-3) couldn’t get out of the second inning, allowing seven runs on 10 hits, including five doubles, in 1 2/3 innings.

Deskins’ cause was not aided by the strange positioning of right-fielder Tito Landrum, a Dodger replacement player during the 1995 lockout.

Landrum, playing shallow and far off the line, chased run-scoring doubles by Shane Monahan, Sealy and Mike Lanza, two of them possibly catchable fly balls.

Doubles by Monahan and Sealy gave the JetHawks a 2-0 lead in the first. Doubles by Sealy and Lanza keyed a five-run, six-hit outburst in the second to make it 7-0.

The JetHawks scored three runs in the third and fifth innings, Sturdivant’s two-run triple and Dusty Wathan’s three-run double doing the brunt of the damage.

San Bernardino’s pitching was so battered, Manager Del Crandall put starting catcher David Steed on the mound to open the seventh. Steed retired the side, striking out two.
