From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Republican Lt. Gov. Mike Huckabee dropped out of the U.S. Senate race to serve out the 2 1/2 years left in the term of Arkansas Gov. Jim Guy Tucker, who was convicted of conspiracy and fraud. Huckabee will become governor automatically upon Tucker’s resignation, which is set for July 15. After Tucker returned from a one-day check-up at the Mayo Clinic at Rochester, Minn., his office announced that he is in need of a liver transplant. The governor suffers from ulcerative colitis, a progressive gastro-intestinal ailment.
